About the Artist

Douglas Berquist

Douglas Berquist

Berquist first emerged in the artist community in Calgary, Alberta, Canada in 1978 when he and two other young artists worked with the Canada Council to fund and create an artist-run filmmakers center in Calgary. He soon began collaborating with static visual artists, performance artists, filmmakers and indie theatre directors on various media projects and performance art installations. As his work developed over the next 10 years, he received several local, provincial and national awards grants and had 3 of his art films acquired by the Museum of Modern Art in Auckland, New Zealand for their permanent collection. His photography, sound designs and stage designs were also developing through his collaborations with Canadian visual and performance artist Marcella Bienvenue. His photography, multimedia work and sound designs were being curated and installed locally and internationally at Galleries, Museums and Art Institutions like; Walter Phillips Gallery in Banff, Nichol Arts Museum (Cal), The Glenbow Museum (Cal), Museum of Man, (MAN), Alberta Off Centre Gallery (Cal), Chinook Theatre (Edm), Los Angeles at the Women's Building (LA), Pleiades Theatre (Cal), Alberta College of Art (Cal), International Inter-Media Perf. Festival, (Win), Motion Gallery- In Focus (Cal) Over the next 25 years he worked as a Producer/filmmaker in the motion picture industry and was honored with; 10 Genie nominations (Canadian National Cinema Awards), a Crystal Heart Award (USA), and 4 of his independent films have being inducted to the prestigious National Canadian Film Archive with Berquist been recognized as a Canadian filmmaker of Distinction. For the last 16 years, his primary artistic focus has been static visual art, painting using acrylics and mixed media. Berquist’s interest as an artist continues to be about “point of view (POV)” and how one’s perspective creates a unique and personal interpretation of the content we experience. He likes to capture images that reflect our fleeting moments of memory, the moments where we grasp content as our senses move through a moment, often only perceiving that which is graphic or easily recalled. His compositions are often pulled experiences that are fleeting flashes of memory, so often lost, but if examined closer can challenge the way we hear, see and perceive the world around us and ourselves in it. His paintings are often very graphic in style as he finds the world full of juxtaposing shapes. Colors are bold and the of the depth of the image is often used to accentuate the point of view.
